If you’ve put the wrong fuel in your car:
Petrol and diesel engines work in very different ways
Neither will run properly on the wrong fuel — and no, you can’t safely mix petrol and diesel in a car, even in small amounts. Left alone, wrong fuel can cause real damage to pumps, injectors and seals.
The good news: if you call a wrong fuel rescue service quickly, there’s almost never any lasting harm. Our technicians drain the contaminated fuel, flush the system, refill with clean fuel, and get you back on the road — usually the same hour. No towing, no garage, no drama

Roadside, forecourt, driveway or at work. Fuel Fixer’s wrong fuel rescue service fixes your misfuel on the spot, usually in under an hour.
Whether you’ve put petrol in a diesel car, diesel in a petrol car, AdBlue in the fuel tank, or the pump has given you contaminated fuel, our technicians carry everything needed for every make and model — cars, vans, 4x4s, motorhomes, HGVs and more. We’ll also supply you with fresh, clean fuel at normal pump prices so you can drive straight on afterwards. Any follow-up work is rare, and if it’s needed our engineer will tell you honestly.
Trained wrong fuel technicians with fully-equipped mobile units
Every engineer Fuel Fixer sends out arrives in a fully-stocked rescue van carrying the specialist draining and flushing equipment modern fuel systems need. It’s the kind of on-site fuel doctor service most garages aren’t set up to provide. Where necessary we’ll flush fuel lines, filters and high-pressure pumps, then refill with clean fuel so you can drive away. All you need to do is make yourself safe and call us.
Common symptoms of wrong fuel
It’s surprisingly easy to misfuel without realising — the pump handles look similar, you’re in a hurry, the nozzle just fits. Hundreds of UK drivers put the wrong fuel in their car every single day.
If your car won’t start or runs rough after filling up, check your fuel receipt first. If there’s any doubt, call Fuel Fixer and describe what happened — we’ll give you honest, straightforward advice with no obligation.

I’ve put petrol in a diesel car and driven it — have I done damage?
Your car may go a short distance on the clean fuel still sitting in the lines. But as the wrong fuel works through the system — especially once it reaches the high-pressure pump and injectors on a diesel — the risk of damage climbs quickly. There’s no truly “safe” amount of wrong fuel in a car. It all needs to come out. If you’re not sure what state things are in, call our wrong fuel hotline and we’ll walk you through it.
Even if the car has been driven, stalled, or now refuses to restart, our wrong fuel rescue team handles almost every misfuel on the spot — while you wait, without the car ever needing to leave where it is.
Wrong fuel mistakes happen — to everyone
Over 300,000 UK drivers misfuel every year. Sooner or later, most people end up putting petrol in a diesel car or diesel in a petrol car by mistake. If that’s you right now, the worst thing you can do is try to drive on — it only makes it worse.
Call our wrong fuel rescue hotline and speak to an expert. We’ll have a technician with you quickly and get you back on your way with minimum fuss.

No drama, no garage and no towing bills.

Petrol and Diesel differences
Can you mix petrol and diesel in a car? Here’s why you shouldn’t
Petrol ignites instantly from an electrical spark. Diesel burns more slowly, compressed under huge pressure inside the engine. The two fuels are built for completely different combustion cycles, which is exactly why neither engine runs properly on the wrong one.
Diesel is thicker, heavier and oilier than petrol. Diesel engines actually rely on that oiliness to lubricate the high-pressure pump and injectors. Petrol strips that protective film away, leaving precision metal parts exposed to rapid wear — the real reason petrol in a diesel car is so damaging if it’s ignored.
Our own tests show that petrol mixed into diesel starts to dissolve rubber fuel lines in under 24 hours. Without proper lubrication, fuel pumps, pistons and cylinders lose their protection. Our wrong fuel rescue procedure is designed to remove every trace of contamination before any of that can happen.
And no — petrol and diesel don’t blend evenly in the tank. Petrol gradually separates and floats on top of the diesel, which is why simply topping up with more of the correct fuel almost never fixes a misfuel properly.
Protecting your engine after a misfuel
Petrol destroys the lubricating properties of diesel, leaving fuel pumps, pistons, cylinders with reduced protection from wear. Our procedure minimises the chance of any damage to engine components. Fast action is important to prevent damage to engine components.
Our own tests show that petrol mixed into diesel starts to degrade fuel lines in less than a day. Safety features in modern car designs make it hard to remove all fuel in the tank. FuelFixer pioneered the technology to accomplish this without needing garage work. We have also developed an after-care additive which our technician may recommend in some cases to help minimse any ongoing problems after a misfuel
We look after individual drivers, company fleets, vans, HGVs and commercial vehicle operators across the UK. We also provide contract wrong fuel rescue services to insurance companies, recovery operators and main dealer networks. Our ISO 9001 & 14001 certification reflects how seriously we take safety, environmental responsibility and customer care.
Fuel Fixer started with one van. Today it’s the UK’s biggest specialist misfuelled car fixer, with mobile wrong fuel rescue units in every major town, plus coverage across Ireland and continental Europe.
To date, our technicians have rescued nearly a quarter of a million stranded motorists.
