Can you mix petrol and diesel in a car? Here’s why you shouldn’t

Petrol ignites instantly from an electrical spark. Diesel burns more slowly, compressed under huge pressure inside the engine. The two fuels are built for completely different combustion cycles, which is exactly why neither engine runs properly on the wrong one.

Diesel is thicker, heavier and oilier than petrol. Diesel engines actually rely on that oiliness to lubricate the high-pressure pump and injectors. Petrol strips that protective film away, leaving precision metal parts exposed to rapid wear — the real reason petrol in a diesel car is so damaging if it’s ignored.

Our own tests show that petrol mixed into diesel starts to dissolve rubber fuel lines in under 24 hours. Without proper lubrication, fuel pumps, pistons and cylinders lose their protection. Our wrong fuel rescue procedure is designed to remove every trace of contamination before any of that can happen.

A: Petrol and diesel behave very differently inside an engine. Petrol removes the lubrication that a diesel fuel system relies on, and begins to attack rubber seals and fuel lines within about a day. Short term, a diesel car with petrol in the tank will usually stall, lose power, sound rough, or refuse to restart. Worst case — if the mixture keeps running through the high-pressure pump and injectors — you can be looking at expensive repairs. A quick wrong fuel drain is nearly always far cheaper than leaving it.

Q: I’ve put petrol in a diesel car — how much damage have I done?

A: If you haven’t started the engine, the risk of real damage is almost zero. Q: Do I need a new fuel filter after a misfuel?

A: Almost never. The filter doesn’t hold much fuel, and petrol and diesel don’t “condense” inside it. During a proper wrong fuel drain the filter is flushed through with the correct fuel as part of the procedure. Treat any garage insisting on a filter swap after a misfuel with caution.

A: That’s a genuine problem and needs draining quickly — ideally before the engine is started. AdBlue is mostly water plus urea (acidic), not a fuel. Q: Can I siphon the wrong fuel out myself?

A: Not on modern cars. Today’s fuel tanks have anti-siphon devices and internal baffles that defeat a standard hosepipe, and the mixed fuel can’t legally be disposed of down a drain. A proper wrong fuel rescue uses specialist equipment and licensed disposal — it’s faster, safer and cheaper than any DIY attempt.

A: Check the inside of your fuel cap — the correct fuel type is almost always printed there. Slow down on the forecourt, double-check the pump handle colour and label, and if you drive more than one car (or have recently changed cars) pause for a second before you start pumping.
